  Chief Operating Officer

Position Overview:

The RTH Chief Operating Officer is responsible for providing the leadership, management and vision necessary to ensure that the company has the proper operational controls in place to effectively manage the organization and to ensure operating efficiency. This position accomplishes this by supporting the policies, goals and objectives established by the CEO and Board of Directors.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities:

Strategy, Vision and Leadership:

  • Oversight of Construction and Rebuilding Programs to ensure annual goals and objectives are met.
  • Contribute to the development of RTH strategic goals and objectives as well as the overall management of the organization.
  • Advise the CEO and other key members of senior management regarding budget and cash flow and policy issues of construction and programs.
  • Develop work and repair calendars to support grant and funding requirements in coordination with Director of Volunteer Management
  • Maintain continuous lines of communication, keeping the CEO informed of all critical issues.
  • Represent the organization externally, as necessary, particularly in construction and contract negotiations.
  • Work with Rebuilding Together National to evaluate, define and align Houston operational goals and strategies

Team Development/Leadership:

  • Oversee, direct, and organize the work of the operations teams.
  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
  • Ensure staff members receive timely and appropriate training and development.
  • Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, conduct annual performance appraisals, and administer salary adjustments.
  • Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach: assign accountabilities; set objectives; establish priorities; and monitor and evaluate results.


  • Upgrade and implement an appropriate system of policies, internal controls and procedures.
  • Assist in planning, coordination and execution of the annual budget process. 
  • Ensure that RTH is adhering to the strategic plan, delivering status reports to the CEO.
  • Provide analytical support to RTH internal management team including development of internal management reporting capabilities.
  • Work with management team to ensure efficient daily technical operations of Salesforce and IT functions.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This position has direct oversight of the Construction, Home after Harvey, Volunteer Home Repair and warehouse teams.

Education, Experience, And Training:

  • Business or management degree mandatory, a master’s in business administration is preferred
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in a senior management role.
  • Construction or Facility Operations experience preferred.
  • Experience either as an employee or board member of a nonprofit organization; must be familiar with nonprofit operations.
  • Proven track record of success facilitating progressive organizational change and development within a growing organization
  • Excellent judgment and creative problem solving skills including negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Strong mentoring, coaching experience to a team with diverse levels of expertise
  • Superior management skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and volunteers.
  • Energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive; a team leader who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical initiatives.
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with senior management, RTH board of directors, and staff
  • Passion for RTH mission

Computer Skills:

  • Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite products.
  • Familiar with Google Suite
  • Experience with CRM software, e.g., Salesforce

Compenstion And Benefits:

  • Commensurate with experience, but generally includes:
  • Salary competitive with like positions within the Houston not-for profit sector
  • An additional salary add of $6,000/year to compensate for lack of health insurance
  • Dental and life insurance benefit
  • 12 holidays annually
  • Vacation of 4+ weeks annually (commensurate with experience)
